As the summer solstice approaches, I get an urge to explore somewhere new to find some different sunset angles. I took the 2 minute Corran ferry trip over to Argour for 24 hours. It only costs £13 and saves you a long drive going in via the Glenfinnaan road.
It was my first time on the peninsula and I was really taken by how big it is, how pretty it is and how quiet it is. Glencoe and Fort William were really busy with motorhomes and the usual Instagram tourists, but as soon as I headed south from Argour it felt very peaceful and the roads were deserted.
I did some digging around on Google maps to find a view of the islands Eigg and Rum from the Kilmory area, but there were very few options to get close to the coastline. I drove down a single track road towards Fascadale, avoiding the lambs who sit on the road and are reluctant to move. I got stuck in the car when I tried to do a 30 point turn to head back where I drove in from. The car was truly beached on soft mud and there was no phone signal and pretty much no chance of passing traffic to help out. I ended up taking part of my sleeping platform out of the car and sticking it under the rear wheel that was stuck and managed to get out.
I headed back inland and up a hill waiting until 10:20 for a late sunset.
The sky conditions weren't that good for sunset, but I didn't see any midges until I found a park up for the night.
After an early breakfast I headed towards Glenuig and back onto the mainland around the Glenfinnan area.
As soon as I got back onto the mainland, my heart sank due to the sheer number of cars parked all over the road at Glenfinnan for the Harry Potter train 'experience'.
Overall, my brief visit to Ardnamurchan left me with a nice feeling, it was so quiet but driving there was quite intense meandering along the single track coastal roads which are covered in thick trees. I look forward to going back there to explore further.
